Now in its 27th year, the festival has become much more than a comedy showcase. It is a cultural institution, a gathering place where people from all walks of life come together to share in one of humanity’s most universal experiences – laughter.

What has always set the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival apart is its unique blend of local and international talent. The festival creates a meeting point between global acts and South African performers, showcasing the diversity of comedy while celebrating the country’s own rich storytelling traditions. From sharp observational humour and witty social commentary to physical comedy and visual spectacle, every performance offers something different.

Yet the festival’s true success lies not only in its performers but in its audience. In a world increasingly divided by difference, laughter remains one of the most powerful forces for connection. Strangers find themselves laughing together. Generations share jokes. Cultural barriers dissolve. For one evening, everyone is united by a common experience.

This sense of connection is particularly meaningful in Cape Town, a city whose strength has always been found in its diversity. The festival reflects the city’s evolving identity, proving that the arts continue to play an important role in bringing communities together.

For visitors, the Funny Festival offers another reason to experience Cape Town during the quieter winter season. Alongside the city’s celebrated food scene, wine routes, cultural attractions and natural beauty, the festival adds a vibrant entertainment dimension to the destination’s winter tourism offering.

The 27th annual Jive Cape Town Funny Festival is currently running at the Baxter Theatre Centre from 28 May to 21 June 2026, bringing together South Africa’s leading comedians and international variety performers for a month of laughter and entertainment.

Because sometimes the best destination is simply a seat in a theatre, surrounded by strangers who leave feeling a little more connected than when they arrived.

And if laughter truly is the best medicine, then the Baxter Theatre may just be Cape Town’s happiest winter clinic.

We came we laughed, we bought the wors roll, won the Jive hamper, took the selfies and left on a laughter bubble high.
